Sustainable Tourism: Industry Champions Workshop (The Champion Level)

The Sustainable Tourism Industry Champion Workshop, organized by the Tourism Productivity Nexus (TPN) in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Malaysia, recently gathered industry leaders to shape the future of sustainable tourism in Malaysia. As the concluding event in a four-part workshop series, it highlighted the crucial role of sustainable practices in balancing environmental conservation with economic progress.

The workshop brought together representatives from tourism associations, experts, and government officials to address key areas such as governance, community-centered tourism, and digital transformation. A notable feature of the workshop was a pitching session where participants showcased their sustainable tourism projects through a pitching session. These projects were assessed by a panel of experts from government agencies, UNDP, and industry specialists, with top proposals will be receiving special recognition. These efforts not only promote sustainability but also boost productivity, aligning with the National Tourism Policy and Malaysia’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The session identified four main issues affecting business operations in Sarawak. Energy consumption and generation was highlighted as a key concern, particularly in ensuring reliable and cost-effective electricity supply for businesses. Land conversion and land use categories were also discussed, with challenges arising from zoning restrictions and land development approvals. Additionally, human capital and workforce readiness were recognized as critical factors, emphasizing the need for better data on employee availability and graduate skill-matching to meet industry demands. Lastly, concerns related to gas and water supply were raised, focusing on their availability, cost, and regulatory challenges. Addressing these issues is essential to creating a more conducive and competitive business environment in Sarawak. To further enhance the ease of doing business in Sarawak, it was proposed to conduct engagement sessions with key stakeholders, including the Economic Planning Unit (EPU), to gain broader insights and align strategies. Additionally, InvestSarawak suggested mapping the business journey based on sectoral perspectives to better tailor regulatory improvements and policy interventions to the needs of different industries. These collaborative efforts aim to streamline processes, reduce investment barriers, and create a more business-friendly environment in Sarawak. #SarawakProductive #EODBSarawak #DrivingProductivityoftheNation
