Petaling Jaya, 28 August 2024 - In a move that promises to boost productivity in Malaysia's chemical industry, the Chemical Productivity Nexus (CPN) has unveiled an innovative initiative aimed at enhancing the accessibility and affordability of the Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA) Certification program.
According to Director General of Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC), Zahid Ismail, "The DGSA Certification program aligns with Malaysia's commitment to the ASEAN Economic Community strategy and our national upskilling aspirations under RMK-12. By making the DGSA training more accessible and affordable, we are taking a significant step towards creating a safer, more efficient, and sustainable industry landscape, which will ultimately drive productivity and competitiveness".
The ASEAN Framework Agreement on the Facilitation of Goods in Transit (AFAFGIT), Protocol 9, mandates the presence of DGSAs within chemical and dangerous goods processes to ensure compliance with safety protocols and optimize handling processes. However, the operationalization of this requirement has been lacking, creating a gap that this initiative aims to address.
"The Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA) Certification program is critical for the safe handling and transportation of dangerous goods, this initiative is a testament to the CPN's commitment to the growth, development, and productivity of the chemical industry in Malaysia, aligning with the nation's broader economic and sustainability objectives. By training and certifying local Malaysians as DGSAs, we are not only improving industry safety standards but also enhancing operational efficiency and productivity" explained Zahid.
Currently, only multinational corporations (MNCs) have been able to send their personnel overseas for DGSA training, leaving Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) at a disadvantage. This disparity has prompted the industry to call for more accessible and affordable DGSA training options within Malaysia. The CPN has heeded this call, embarking on a mission to empower local SMEs and drive productivity across the chemical sector.
