Malaysia Leads ASEAN-OECD Regulatory Meeting In Jakarta

02 December 2024

The 9th Annual ASEAN-OECD Good Regulatory Practices Network (GRPN) Meeting, held at the Westin Hotel in Jakarta, Indonesia, concluded successfully under the theme “Shaping the Future: Building Better Regulations for Tomorrow.”

The event gathered key policymakers, regulators, and experts from ASEAN and OECD countries to enhance regulatory governance in a dynamic global environment.

Co-chaired by Zahid Ismail, Director General of the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC), and Mark Steel, Director of Regulatory Systems at New Zealand’s Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, the meeting highlighted the significance of cross-border collaboration in developing robust regulatory frameworks.

Since its inception in 2015, the ASEAN-OECD GRPN has been a crucial platform for sharing best practices and empowering member countries to implement effective regulatory reforms.

Malaysia demonstrated its commitment to regulatory modernisation through initiatives like the Bureaucratic Reform Circular and the Regulatory Experimentation Circular, which guide ministries and agencies in adopting technology-driven processes.

These efforts have led to reduced processing times, improved service delivery, and a more attractive investment environment.

A notable session at the event, led by Malaysia’s Legal Advisor from the Personal Data Protection Department, focused on the challenges of managing data privacy in the digital age, offering participants practical strategies for addressing emerging regulatory demands.

As Malaysia prepares for its ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, it will host the 10th Annual ASEAN-OECD GRPN Meeting, further solidifying its leadership in advancing citizen-centred regulatory frameworks.

The meeting will offer an opportunity to deepen regional collaboration and promote practices that balance economic growth with societal well-being.

The 9th GRPN Meeting reaffirmed the importance of agile regulatory frameworks in addressing global challenges, with Malaysia’s leadership serving as a benchmark for regional excellence in regulatory innovation.
